Diana’s FOCUS

TDSB must return to a student-focused agenda that prioritizes academic achievement and expanded opportunities for every student to reach their unique potential

With my twenty-five years of advocacy in education I will work to:

  • A return to Back to Basics education with a focus on academic and career building subjects
  • Improve student achievement while supporting individual students’ needs and goals
  • Improve school safety, reduce bullying, and enable greater parental involvement
  • Increase excellent specialized programming, specialized interest, and extra-curricular opportunities for all students
  • Restore and improve Special Education supports to meet the unique needs of all students, including those with learning disabilities, autism, giftedness, developmental and other disabilities
  • Require TDSB to be more transparent, accountable, and fiscally responsible

EXPERIENCE

Education Advocacy and Volunteer Leadership

Parent and Community Involvement: Over 25 years of active leadership and participation in school-related activities, including 10 years on School Councils (5 as Chair).

  • Key Roles: Led dozens of a large variety and range of initiatives at junior and senior public schools, including chairing councils and committees, fundraising, and advocating for educational programs.
  • Program Development: Played a significant role in implementing programs like Empower Reading, and significant support of programs like steel pan music, athletic teams, and after-school activities.
  • Community Safety: Served on City committees addressing safety issues at multiple schools related to the Roehampton Hotel shelter, fostering collaboration among stakeholders.

Achievements in School Councils:

  • Junior and Senior Schools: Advocated for educational resources and organized community-building events.
  • Fundraising: Coordinated events like silent auctions and community picnics, raising significant funds for school needs.
  • Educational Support: Supported the development of learning disability resources and other academic programs.

Professional Background:

  • Business Career: Experience at CBC, Global, CTV, and Bell, in producing, reporting, and strategic roles. Notably, managed national broadcast schedules during critical events like September 11th.

Key Skills:

  • Strategic Leadership: Proven ability to chair committees, lead fundraising efforts, and develop long-term plans.
  • Community Engagement: Built partnerships with various stakeholders to enhance educational outcomes and community safety.
  • Advocacy and Representation: Actively worked to ensure the interests of diverse learning needs and community safety were addressed

A commitment to a variety of programs, pathways, and supports, because each student has unique strengths, challenges, goals, and needs.

PRIORITIES

1. BACK TO BASICS

  • refocus on traditional core subjects
  • build a strong foundation for future academic and workplace success
  • content based on Ontario curriculum and the Better Schools and Student Outcomes Act

2. SAFE SUPPORTIVE SCHOOLS

  • ensure schools are welcoming and safe for all students and staff
  • improve prevention, reporting, and consequences, to reduce incidents of bullying and violence
  • increase focus on respectful behaviour, empathy, and mental health supports

3. VALUE FOR TAX DOLLARS

  • require responsible, effective spending, and better utilization of limited resources
  • stop wasting money on consulting; bloated management; and lengthy staff investigations
  • redirect funds to student needs, supporting teachers, and improving student outcomes

4. ACCOUNTABILITY & TRANSPARENCY

  • demand clear and accessible data, information, and school performance metrics
  • ensure transparent decision-making, funds allocation, and program priorities
  • require accountability at every level of the system, from the board to school level

5.  IMPROVING EDUCATION FOR ALL
Specialized Programs

  • restore excellent Specialized Programs in STEM and the Arts
  • change the flawed Lottery,+ increase offerings so more students can access well-fitting programs, areas of interest, & trades training

Special Education

  • restore and improve Special Education supports, customized to learning needs
  • increase special education funding and targeted help to ensure that needs of all students are met for students with Learning Disabilities, Autism, Giftedness, DHH, developmental disabilities, etc.
